I've fixed similar issue in CVS, could you please try if it solves your
case too? I couldn't reproduce it here, so it's either fixed or I am not
trying hard enough ;-)

This didn't work even before my changes, but it seems reasonable to me
and is easy to do.

This is probably too not related to speed-up changes. It's some
selection related bug. Please could you fill bug report about this?
