I can second not having any luck with google. I actually didn't start
having the problem until after upgrading from Gnome 1.4 to 2.2.

It does not appear to be a frequent problem. If it happens again, is there something I should do to try and help diagnose the cause?

I am not even sure I understand the relationships of all of the software that makes up Gnome and how to diagnose and fix problems such as the one I encountered. It seems that there are several services that Gnome provides to the applications. Is there any user level documentation on how this stuff is supposed to work, and what to do if it gets broken or out of sync?
