[Evolution] Attachment pane shows no attachments

This is Evolution 1.4.5 under RHEL 3.0, and a recent development (i.e.,
it used to work), I'm not sure exactly when this began happening.  When
I compose an e-mail message and add an attachment I get the attachment
pane below the message pane as expected, but its entirely blank.  No
icon or scrollbar.  There are attachments, as recipients admit to
receiving them, but they don't show up in the composer.

What could be going on here?
