Are you sure that you've set the "Required Information" "Email
Address" correctly?
If Paradise/TelstraClear will only allow addresses of the form
foobar@paradise.net, and you are trying to use bwaldow@alum.mit.edu
maybe the ISP is rightly rejecting it.
