I had the exact same problem Felix. Just downgrade (and pin)
libgnomecanvas2-0 and libgnomecanvas2-common to their stable versions
and everything will be back to normal.
GNOME 2.10 is slowly entering testing. In a few weeks or so you should
be able to upgrade these libraries and find that the problems are fixed.
