sorry i dont know any more...maybe someone else will answer
all i can think of - is that the correct java executable, if you use  
java-gcj-compat, why is it not /usr/bin/java?
I will try using java-gcj-compat on my next build and compare notes  
so please cc: sparcmoz if you file an issue
