I suggest not do that, yet.

In my case, building linux/sparc on debian unstable,
(a) it can be built and run nicely using my own gcc 4.1.2 built from  
gnu sources into /usr/local
(b) using java-gcj-compat cannot pass configure tests for building  
m190 and is not detected at runtime for m187.

I will be trying Caolan's suggestions with m190...
