Hi All,

I am very new to Mono and have a very quick question. I just ran the Mono
Migration Analyzer and found that some of the methods in my .dll's are not
supported. Does this stop me from using Mono to host my web application?
Does this apply if Mono runs the already deployed web application (without
having to recompile?). I presume that the unsupported methods come into
picture if the code is compiled my Mono. Please let me know.

It will most likely prevent you from using the app, but it depends on
the status of the unsupported method. If it's marked with TODO, it
might work. If it's missing or when it's marked as throwing NIE
(NotImplementedException), the app will definitely not run.

It's irrelevant how the application was compiled. If some methods are
missing from Mono, you won't be even able to compile the app using Mono.

Hi,

I have SuSE 10.0 running on an HP AMD64 x 2 box and I would really like 
to get hold of the latest versions of Mono and Monodevelop.

On the downloads page for the 64 bit version, there are instructions as 
follows:

The url appears to be a reference to the page on which it appears - i.e. 
it is self-referential.  Neither does it appear to work in YaST: for me, 
at any rate.  Here's what I tried:

In YaST --> Software --> Installation Source, I clicked on add --> http 
and, in the dialog that appears added the following details:

Server Name: go-mono.com
Directory on server: download-stable/suse-100-x86_64

After clicking OK in the dialog, it went away and thought about it for a 
while and then added 27 identical URLs to the list in the Software 
source media dialog.  The URLs added are all listed (immediately after 
the line specifying my installation DVD source) as:

http://go-mono.com/download-stable/suse-100-x86_64

(which, I guess, is what you'd expect except that I was only expecting 
it to add a single line)

I then turned refresh on for each of these entries and clicked Finish.

Back in the YaST Control Centre I chose Software Management.  YaST then 
tried to refresh each of these sources.  On every attempt, the error 
message:

ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media)

was displayed.  Very user friendly, I thought :-)

When I eventually got back to YaST, nothing from this installation 
source appeared to be displayed (i.e. there was nothing I could see that 
indicated that I had any version of Mono available to me except 1.1.8x 
that I had from the installation DVD, and which I had uninstalled prior 
to adding the new source).  The source column in YaST was empty in all 
cases.

Finally, just for the heck of it, I turned refresh off and tried again.  
The result was the same.

Does anyone know what the undoubtedly obvious thing is that I've 
missed?  I've also posted to the opensuse list, in case it's a YaST 
problem.  Hopefully these two lists don't overlap sufficiently for this 
to be a problem.  Please let me know if it is, and I'll kill one of the 
threads.

     It is unfortunate that I only learned about this minutes before the
network was supposed to go down, so I could not make alternative plans
for the Mono web site.

I'm having a similar problem with Ubuntu - when i try access my enabled 
site I get this error:-

I've been experimenting the same problem as yours... Did you find a
solution? I've been trying specificating some proxies but that didn't
work neither. I'm a completely newbie in C# (this is my first "program")
and don't know how to address the problem.

Any tip would be a lot a of help.

Hi,
I got the code working on Windows without any problems (using .NET)
I will test the code using mono to see wether this is Linux specific or
not. If so, it might be due to a bug in mono... but I don't know at this
time. I'll check it out.

Currently using the library for my ASP.NET 2.0 blog system.

I'm use to using Debian-based distros (mostly Ubuntu).  I just
recently setup a hosted account at eApps and would like to get Mono
running.  I have root access to my virtual server so installing
whatever I want is no problem.

I'd like to avoid installing all the various dependency libraries by
hand (enter apt-get-like app) and typically install Mono via source.

Then you should setup a compiling environment (subversion client, bintools,
autotools, etc) and follow the instructions at
http://www.mono-project.com/Compiling_Mono and optionally these
http://www.mono-project.com/Parallel_Mono_Environments

    The Subversion repository is back up in the new location.  

    They might need to recable it, so the service might go down for a

I thought RPM only had the capability of installing already-downloaded
RPM packages.  I was hoping more of something were I just mark the
various packages I need and it goes out to the central repository,
downloads them all, and installs.  I don't really want to download and
maintain a bunch of different RPMs myself.

Unless you use a gui like YaST, it sounds like you would be better off
working with a Debian-based linux distro.

I believe you should be usegin yum, it works preaty much like apt.

Customers, it gets no updates except security fixes or critical fixes.

Stable is our current stable release, the one that you should use.

I've tried it on Windows, the same exact program with the same generated
dll fomr delicious-net and, it worked!
Without any modification... what's happening with it when running on
mono? I'll have to try to find out why this behaviour... Any tip?
Should we send a bug?

Subject: [Mono-list] Custom Objects stored in Session Variables

I have a web application that is running as expected through ASP.Net/IIS,
but erroring out in Mono, both in xsp2 and mod_mono2.  An exception appears
to be thrown when trying to either write to or read from a session variable
that is housing a custom object from a class I've written.

Firstly, I've seen that strings work just fine in my session variables.
Secondly, my custom object consists only of two arraylists of type int.

I haven't been able to find any documentation supporting whether this should
or should not work in the mono server environment.  I have tested both on an
Ubuntu linux server, and my Windows Vista laptop running xsp2 and am getting
the same error.  Again, its working just fine in IIS.

Here's a link to my Ubuntu linux box.  In order to get the error, log in
with the username of 'bidding' and the password of 'password'.

I'll try and drudge up some example code to recreate the problem on a

The first thing to do would probably be to try it with the latest  
version of Mono.
If it doesn't work, join #mono on irc.gnome.org to see if anybody  
knows about it, then file a bug.


Since earlier this night, I've been unable to use the library,  
probably a problem at del.icio.us's end.

I'm developing a distributed application in C#, where I want to use .NET
Remoting, but there's problem with it.

Everything works fine when I call remote procedure with parameters of
standard types, like string, int, bool,... But if I want to send an own
object, I get the error: "Unhandled Exception:
System.NullReferenceException: Object 
reference not set to an instance of an object" I tried to use an HttpChannel
and also TcpChannel but the 
problem is somewhere else. 
I found an example that works when I use dll-s.

That should work. But it doesn't, only when I make DLL files from Remote
Class (CRemoteObj.cs) and Interface (IRemoteObj.cs). And then I must include
these DLL files into my server and client. 

I believe that this can work without DLL but I don't how, so if anyone has
any idea, please help me. I will really appreciate it, I cannot go forward
because of this. I don't want to use DLL files.

If I understand your problem correctly, it has to do with the fact that 
both the client and server have to have a definition of the type you are 
trying to pass. 

I've not read your post in great detail, though, so I could be wrong.

The short answer is: it cannot work w/out a shared dll, because when
the interfaces are compiled in both assemblies, their identities are not
the same anymore. The interfaces will be treated as 2 distinct
incompatible types.

If you don't like this, you have to drop the interfaces at all and
use stubs generated by the "soapsuds" tool (delivered with mono
and MS.NET). It's not worthwhile.

sounds as if a reference to the mod-mono handler might be missing.

System.Management is not implemented in Mono.

You've probably executed the assembly from a network share.
On MS.NET, the default security settings prevent full trust
assemblies from being executed.

I need to deploy a web application composed by 12 modules (the main
framework, distributed cache, ORM, DB client, search engine, S3
interface, RSS+Atom feeder, etc.) that aims to be run by thousands of
threads per day.
In such this context I cannot stop the application to replace the
modules with newer versions (for bugfixing or feature
implementations): is there any secure procedure to follow for the
deployment of updates under Mono?
VS.NET provides a utility for deploy the website: since I'm not going
to make the system run under .NET, I would like to find a similar
solution.

That should work. But it doesn't, only when I make DLL files from Remote
Class (CRemoteObj.cs) and Interface (IRemoteObj.cs). And then I must include
these DLL files into my server and client. 

I believe that this can work without DLL but I don't how, so if anyone has
any idea, please help me. I will really appreciate it, I cannot go forward
because of this. I don't want to use DLL files.

Somehow I'm having trouble getting GZipStream to work in mono.
It's as if System.IO.Compression doesn't exist in mono at all? 

I do:

$ cat GZTest.cs

}

$ mcs /target:library GZTest.cs
GZTest.cs(1,7): error CS0234: The type or namespace name
`Compression' does not exist in the namespace `System.IO'. Are
you missing an assembly reference?

`IO.Compression' could not be found. Are you missing a using
directive or an assembly reference?
Compilation failed: 2 error(s), 0 warnings

$ mcs --version
Mono C# compiler version 1.2.4.0

As far as I can tell google, other people are able to use
System.IO.Compression in mono fine. Any ideas what I'm doing
wrong?

Found the problem...Novell is looking for the Mono.Security.dll in the
following location on 2003

C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv

A good way to find out is to download filemon and this will tell you where
Mono is trying to be accessed from. 

Would have been nice for this to be in some sort of installation
documentation from mono all the same....

I have the following section inside my app.config file :

This is supposed to be the equivalent of doing this at the beginning of the
application :
 
AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AppendPrivatePath("myPath");
 
Since the AppendPrivatePath method is deprecated, I want to use the
app.config way, but it doesn't work on Mono.  Therefore, I have to stick
with the deprecated method for now.
 
I searched the bug database and found out that there was already a bug
logged about this issue (57612), but the status of this bug hasn't changed
since 2005-07-06 and it seems to have been forgotten.  Somebody submitted a
patch but I still have the bug with the latest version.
 
Has the patch been merged into the main version?

Since System.IO.Compression is a .NET 2.0 feature, you have to
use "gmcs" instead.

I'm very interested in writing multiplatform apps with QT, so I've
tested Qyoto a few weeks before. It works great with linux, but I'm
struggling with the smoke library in windows. I've tested with the
mingw gcc compiler 3.4.6, 4.1.2 and 4.2.0, and havent got a smoke.dll.
With the msvc2005 compiler I got a smoke.dll, but the compilation of
qyoto complains about a lot of missing references.
Does anybody know how to compile smoke and qyoto within windows, and
can write an howto?

Yes, they should be collected by the garbage collector. I think the  
MSN docs explicitly say so. I use them extensively in my application,  
generating many hundreds of them, and I am confident they are being  
collected.

It doesn't. Have a look at

reflection.c:mono_reflection_create_dynamic_method ().

The function is calling reflection_methodbuilder_to_mono_method (),
which it turn uses malloc, because a dynamic method doesn't have an
image to allocate the memory from.

I tried to introduce a GC controlled MonoMemPool per DynamicMethod,
but the JIT crashed right after mempool's collection.

installation source for Mono on SuSE Linux 10.0 on this page:

Since then I've tried the following installation source:

This source added to YaST just fine, but Mono will still not install.  
Despite adding this installation source, and even though the Mono 
version offered is 1.2.4-17.1, the installation fails because the only 
version of mono-basic that is available is verion 1.1.8.3-6.

This seems odd, but since I don't intend to program in basic, can I 
ignore it, "Risking system inconnsistencies" as YaST puts it?  Or will 
Mono not work without it?

Hi Peter,

I hate to say this, but I tried installing from go-mono.com in yast on
suse 10.0 x86_64, and it worked :(  One difference is that I didn't have
the dvd installation source configured.  In fact, when I tried it, I
didn't have any installation sources except mono.

That being the case, it sounds like a yast bug (ie: 14 instances
definitely shouldn't be added).

But, I'm curious to know why the go-mono.com source didn't add
correctly, yet the opensuse.org repo did?  Could you attach output from
the yast logs of when it tries to add the go-mono.com repo?

As for the rpms in the suse build service, you probably tried installing
during the update for 1.2.4, which I was doing yesterday.  In fact,
here's the updated mono-basic rpm:

http://software.opensuse.org/download/Mono/SUSE_Linux_10.0/noarch/mono-basic-1.2.4-6.1.noarch.rpm

If you give the build service rpms another shot, it should work.

You should never have to 'force' the installs of any mono rpms.  If so,
that's a bug.

Sorry for may be basic questions, but I've got some difficulties trying to use Remoting in Mono.

1. I have two web-applications running on Apache (mod_mono). How could I organize interaction between them using Remoting? It doesn't work with basic configuration of apache's virtual hosts and remoting host/client. Connection from client to Remoting host via port 8989 always fials with "System.Net.WebException: Error: ConnectFailure". 
How could I host Remoting host in this case?

2. Trying to run Remoting host application as a simple Console application I've got exception too, but very strange: "System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException: Configuration file 'Listener.config' could not be loaded: No such host is known ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No such host is known".
What is the reason of this exception? May be wrong environment configuration?

I've build these simple remoting applications exacty how it is written in this MSDN article:

There is a small bug in APS.NET 2.0 that prevents Remoting
from being properly configured.

Please try this global.asax as a workaround:

Personal feedback experience : I would try to manage my "visit cards" 
as a collection of VisitCards (say VisitCardsCollection) objects, as 
it better integrates in the .Net framework philosophy and help both 
in keeping a robust and flexible object design. Next I would consider 
my Directory class ("AnnaireDAL") as something that manages 
CardsCollection objets (directory update/query/....). You have really 
nice language features like properties indexers and generics, 
consider them at your advantage. May the classes/interfaces in 
System.Collections.Generic could help you a lot too (Dictionary ? 
List ?). It is just another OO approach, it does not pretend to be a 
"better" one.

The guide should mention that it's "for x86 and x86-64 on Linux"  
currently. :-) Otherwise people will download it through that page  
and will be disappointed that it doesn't work on their platform.

A link to http://www.mono-project.com/Debugger would also be handy  
and the Latest Release needs to be updated there.

Nobody has actually told you what is wrong with your code!

CarteDeViste is in the CarteVisite namespace. AnnuaireDAL is in the  
root namespace, so when you refer to CarteDeVisite in the definition  
of ExtraireCarte, the compiler cannot find it.

Add "using CarteVisite;" to your second file. You must always add a  
"using" for each namespace that you use in each file, or refer to the  
namespace a class is in using the "CarteVisite.CarteDeVisite" notation.

  have you also already tried the pre-release package - download:

  I don't work with windows but under linux the latest package is working
  pretty well. So maybe it solves the problems you'll have compiling the
  stuff under windows.

i'm just starting with mono. So i created two test classes TestClass1 and
TestClass2 and compile them to TestClasses.dll. I have a class Program.cs
which references TestClasses.dll and is compiled to TestClasses.exe. If i
run the Program mono throws a System.TypeLoadException. If i change -out to
Test.exe everything runs fine.

 

So, is it possible to have same name for .dll and .exe ?

 

 

Makefile is (class code not included because its trivial):

 

all:

  gmcs /t:library -out:TestClasses.dll TestClass1.cs TestClass2.cs

  gmcs /t:exe -out:TestClasses.exe -r:TestClasses.dll Program.cs

I'm creating C# WinForms client-server database application in MONO.

This application reads data from PostgreSQL server using npgsql Dataadapter 
and DataReader classes and stores data mostly in Datasets and sometimes in 
business object properties.

A lot of lookup tables (payment terms, currency list etc) are static.
Currently application reads them from server when new window is opened over 
TCP connection
This makes application slow.

How to cache data in client side ?

Where to find caching module for .NET application ?

It it reasonable to use .NET 2 Web Cache object for this ?
MS Web Cache object doc says that it is designed only for ASP .NET 
application.
Is it reasonable to use it in WinForms application or are there better
caching object available?

I cannot use MS Caching application block since my application needs to run 
in
Linux also.

Andrus,

A solution, known just to few skilled developers, is to use memcached
server with a C# client.
Make a research on Google about this two issues and you will find
"exactly" what are you looking for. Another solution is to write your
own cache manager to store data into the client filesystem and check
for expiration and evictions average: it depends on the context you
want to use the cache for.

Miguel,

I am one of the happiest person in the list at this moment: since I
rely on debugger for most of the development not having it running for
Mono was a huge limitation for me.
I don't know if is this the right place, but... Do you know when will
it be available for MD integration? It was already present but
required the specific compilation directive and it was not working
even in that case.

In windows I can use WMI, but there is a way to do it with MONO running on
linux?

If not, maybe I can get this info by executing a "FREE" and "DF" (executing
those on command line gives the free memory and disks sizes)... but then how
can I get the result from a command line application on my MONO app?

MonoDevelop 0.13 works with Mono 1.2.4. your trouble may come from a path
issue. Do you have many Mono versions deployed on the same machine ? What
reports mono --version

Ateista, If you execute a system command you can redirect the console
input. Google "Console Redirection C#" and you should find an example
on it.

This seems too complicated for this type of task.
I need my application running in single computer.
So I must install and maintain separate server which is not in C# language
and
communicate with it using TCP/IP

This would be better solution. I'd prefer to use some existing class rather

on linux you can read the /proc and /sys 'files'. Like:

$ cat /sys/block/hda/size
488397168

I don't know what this is, blocks or bytes, but you can read all kinds 
of info from the kernel

Hi,

I just completed my master's project and as I used Mono I wanted to
thank everyone who has contributed to development of the framework.
I've found Mono very stable, fast and easy to use.

My project, Katahdin is a programming language interpreter written in
C#. Unlike most interpreters, the language that Katahdin interprets
can be modifed by the running program. You can add new language
constructs such as expressions and statements as easily as defining
new functions and types. If your langauge doesn't have a for-each
statement you can define one in just a few lines.

Katahdin can be compared to CLI languages such as Boo and Nemerle that
have macro systems but it's much more powerful. An entire language can
be defined in Katahdin, turning the interpreter into an interpreter
for that language that can run off the shelf programs. Two languages
can be composed to use them both at the same time. For example, in my
demos I use write a program in one file that has both Python and
FORTRAN code running together, sharing code and data.

You might be interested in looking at Katahdin because:

* It is a medium sized application built entirely in Mono
* It very heavily uses DynamicMethod and ClassBuilder
* It allows for interesting new language development in Mono
* Optimisations could be tested on it

You may also be interested in the theory of Katahdin, and how they are
implemented in Mono:

* Parsing expression grammars
* Packrat parsing

You can find Katahdin, my thesis and other literature at

domain.

Someone asked some days ago how to send a large text buffer to a SQL 
Server database (in the database, his strings were truncated at their 
first 4000 bytes when the code is run under Mono and are complete 
when run with the Microsoft implementation). I post the solution here 
if someone else has the same kind of symptoms. Please, free feel to 
comment and complete/correct.

The "trick" is simply to force the DbSqlDatatype to SqlDbDataType.NText. E.g. :

sqlcmd.CommandText = "INSERT INTO yourtable(...YOURCOLUMN,...).. 
VALUES (.... at YOURCOLUMN,...)"
....

SqlParameter prm = new SqlParameter();
...
prm.ParameterName = "@YOURCOLUMN";
prm.Value = <a very long System.String>
prm.SqlDbDataType = SqlDbDataType.NText;  // your column must be of 
type NTEXT (or VARCHAR(MAX)) in the database !
sqlcmd.Add(prm);
...

By default, SqlDbDataType is set to NVarChar when a System.String 
object is assigned to the  SqlParameter, perfectly correct (both in 
Microsoft and Mono implementations).

Here lies the trick :

The Mono MSSQL implementation does not care about the real length of 
a string assigned to an SqlParameter. It blindly "trusts" the value 
set in the SqlDbDataType property of the SqlParameter object 
(SqlDbType.NVarChar in our case). As 'NVarChars' table columns are 
limited to 4000 unicode characters, the string is truncated to its 
first 4000 characters when sent to the database.

The Microsoft MSSQL implementation (gotcha ? lazzyproof ?) *cares 
about* the string length : if the string assigned to a SqlParameter 
object exceeds 4000 bytes, the SqlDbDataType property of this 
SqlParameter object is considered as set to SqlDbDataType.NText (even 
it still equals to SqlDbDataType.NVarChar). This explain why the 
string is not truncated when sent to the databse in that case. This 
behaviour is *not* documented in the MSDN (!).

Of course if you try to store your more-than-4000 bytes-string in a 
table column defined as "NVarChar" in the database, an exception 
saying "Data truncation will occur if you do that" will be thrown.... 
even SqlDbType is set to SqlDbType.NText. No miracles there.
Altought used 'NVARCHAR'/'NTEXT' here but the same applies for 
'VARCHAR'/'TEXT'.

Server resources to solve this issue while in a rush)
