Is there a good example of a reference application for GTK# that works on both Windows and linux? My thought is that GTK# will make an app that looks like a linux app (even on Windows), and WinForms will make an app that looks like a Windows app (even on linux). All else being equal I'd probably prefer doing a WinForms app because I am the most familiar with it and I do all my development initially on Windows. Someone also mentioned SWT. I understand that's the GUI toolkit used by Eclipse. I am not a Java person but that is perhaps the first really good cross-platform Java GUI toolkit. How would that compare to GTK# and WinForms? My interests are around the following areas - at least :-) 1) Testing frameworks - NUnit of course, but others as well. 2) I'd like to gain some insights into best practices of cross-platform development, particularly desktop gui. 3) I'm hoping to find some time to work together with folks who have ideas about the next version of NUnit (3.0) particularly in terms of how it could use Mono.Addins as a base for it's extension architeture. 4) Lots of free time to share ideas on topics that I won't think of until I'm there. True, but Gtk# on Windows uses the Windows theme engine, so although there are some slight differences, it pretty much looks like a Windows app. In general, Windows apps differ too much from each other just because developers have historically tried to differentiate their apps from the rest by spicing things up, so am not sure that this is much of a problem. > All else being equal I'd probably prefer doing a WinForms app because I > am the most familiar with it and I do all my development initially on > Windows. Eventually, our desire is to make the application use the theme engine in Linux/Gtk, although that is still something far in the future. ] From bapartridge at gmail.com Thu Nov 1 20:56:40 2007 From: bapartridge at gmail.com (Brenton Partridge) Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2007 20:56:40 -0400 Subject: [Mono-list] ASP.NET configuration troubles In-Reply-To: <766cb57b0710310926k4fb08e67u1380c6400b45f3a3@mail.gmail.com> References: <766cb57b0710310422m60ba7880h68a984f2e93d29b2@mail.gmail.com> <445e251c0710310433gcf5e55ewebf39ef54c703174@mail.gmail.com> <766cb57b0710310436m3c8acfbdr9d8002a15f83389a@mail.gmail.com> <445e251c0710310911v21ff6093t7f67af1708d901bb@mail.gmail.com> <13df01c81bda$65fd03c0$a001a8c0@DTEMES> <766cb57b0710310926k4fb08e67u1380c6400b45f3a3@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <2E03596F-C0B2-4983-A091-1F174C3201F6@gmail.com> Hi laas and all, FWIW I've had a similar problem in which I was porting a site from PHP to ASP.NET and an authentication tag was inserted when I didn't need or want one. I also have a web page, on which I'd like to have a "ping" button, that should tell the service to send a certain packet to the client and return a response. My question is - what's the best way to implement this? I've found an implementation of named pipes by Ivan Latunov, but it looks like its windows only. Currently that's OK, but i know for sure that the project will be moved to linux entirely. Is there an implementation that's lightweight and works on both runtimes? Thanks, Vasili. You could use .NET Remoting with IPC channels. That's .NET 2.0 only, though. See System.Runtime.Remoting.IpcChannel on MSDN. OTOH, since you already have a TCP/IP service, why don't you access it via localhost? Only the initialization is slightly different, but it's one line of code under #ifdef. Though i'd prefer something simpler... I just need to send a simple string message, no object passing, nothing too fancy... TCP/IP is a possibility too, but wouldn't that be a bit heavy-weight to open a tcp connection from a page request? I guess I can keep one instance running in the Web Application instance to minimize the overhead... I'll think about that, thanks. I use another file called "remoting conf" for remoting configration thus removing the need for an ifdef. You can use an empty file (other than web.config) if you don't want to instantiate any channels. This is the way I do it, but it is mostly a matter of prefference. From my experience in MS.NET as well as Mono you don't have to instantiate client channels (HTTP TCP IPC) - they are instantiated automagically from machine.config. RemotingConfiguration.Configure is useful to create server channels and other client channels (like named pipes on Linux). Regards, Micha? We need a developer to write a library in C#, that allows an existing SSH and Telnet connection to a server to use Terminal emulation. The idea is to be able to, for example, start YaST or other VT based software from within our application. We have C# SSH and Telnet libraries (purchased ones) already built in and working well in the application, but these can be replaced if you have, or need to (or could) write replacements for us. We will scope the project together on the telephone (we are located in Germany), but need a programmer who has experience with terminal emulation. The library should be finished ASAP. Anyone interested? Then please reply with an estimation of the costs involved, and when you think you could deliver something. Respond off list, please, for more information. In our case we have server tcp channel defined in App.config (our services) and few client channels defined in client App.config's and Web.config. I haven't see any difference between MS.NET and Mono when RemotingConfiguration based on App.config but when client TCP channel defined in Web.config Mono is auto-magically instantiate it and MS.NET does not. From my point of view Mono behavior is more logical and more close to Web.config specification. And i have no idea why MS treats Web.config client tcp channel differently compare to, for example, server http channel. It is strange, but that's what we have in our ASP.NET 1.1 application. Anyway, all above is really minor cosmetic issues and in general i found remoting SingleCall very powerful, reliable and easy to use. That would be my preferable choice for IPC in .NET Regards, amc On 11/3/07, Micha? Message-ID: <4730B211.5070800@yahoo.com.br> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, all! Npgsql Development Team is proud to announce that Npgsql2 Beta1 is available! Its assembly version is 1.98.1, just in case you need to configure something with it using its assembly number. Npgsql is a .Net Data Provider which allows your programs using .Net runtime (mono or ms.net) to connect to postgresql server without any additional library. In this release, besides the usual bug fixes, we would like to highlight initial support for System.Transactions, COPY IN/OUT and uuid postgresql 8.3 datatype. Full release notes can be found here: http://pgfoundry.org/frs/shownotes.php?release_id=966 You can get it at the usual place: http://pgfoundry.org/frs/?group_id=1000140 There are binaris for Mono 2.0 and MS.net 2.0 I'd like to thank God for allowing me to make this happen. I'd like to help all who helped us contributing with feedback, bug fixes and comments which allowed us to improve Npgsql even more! Stay tuned for more features in upcoming releases. Keep your feedback and bug fixes coming! Message-ID: <4731F2AB.7000602@novell.com> This Saturday, the 10th of November, at 10:00am MST, we will be moving the Mono servers from our current datacenter to our new datacenter. We're hoping that this move will be completed within 5 hours, but if problems arise it may take longer. This move will affect: * The main Mono webiste (mono-project.com) * The Mono download pages * Monologue * The Mono documentation Svn and the mailing lists should not be affected. This transition will involve DNS changes, so you will have to wait for the DNS to propagate before you will be able to access these services again. This could take up to 12 hours. This is the same behavior what on MS.NET, the App_Code.dll.compiled file is gnerated to allow lookups by "App_Code" name, but to discover what the real App_Code dll name is, you must either read the above file or walk the list of the assemblies loaded in your application and take the name from there. In general, if your webhandler needs some code for compilation, I would recommend moving it away from App_Code and putting it in a precompiled assembly in the bin/ subdirectory. best regards, marek -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... First i have to correct the Entrys in "Web.sitemap", because the Pages are not written in corrent Upper/Lowercase as named physicaly. But after changing that, the Default.aspx will work. If select a Subpage from Childmenu, i get an Error. Someome out there, who can help me? If select a > Subpage from Childmenu, i get an Error. I've downloaded the sample and ran it without problems (all the menus work as expected) on svn trunk version of Mono. Casing problems arise from the fact that Windows is merely case-aware but not case-sensitive, while Unix is both. To get the sample working without changes, export the MONO_IOMAP=all variable in your environment before launching xsp2. best regards, marek -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
