Since you don't specify what development environment you are using I
will assume you are using Monodevelop in 2.0 mode.

Monodevelop (0.18) will not add the control to the designer file as soon
as you add it to you .aspx file. You will either have to build the
project after you have added the control to the aspx file, or put the
control your self to the designer file.

Few months ago I asked to fix bug 342536 
(https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342536), but it still not 
fixed. And i can't make any additional tests because this bug blocks my 
application at startup.


Also i have a question. Don't you think that there already are too many 
bugs in tracker?

I have many small applications for .NET 1.1 and 2.0 (SWF, ASP.NET) and i 
  try to run them using each version of mono since version ~1.1.3 during 
few years and almost __ALL__ of them do not work properly. And when 
people ask me: "What can you say about mono?", i can answer only one 
thing: "is is very unstable and does not fit for real work". And this is 
a tendency for each new version. You make new releases with new 
features, but existing bugs fixed very slowly.

For me it is clearly that Novell never overtakes Microsoft. Maybe it's 
better to polish existing code then try to implement new features?

In my asp.net application, i'm trying to execute certain code that 
updates a field in a mysql database when page was inactive for twenty 
minutes. But, the Session_End in the Global.asax of my applicacion is 
not fired, because the field was not updated. In web.config the 
sessionState is set to InProc.

What i should to check? Or is a bug?

How about a VS solution?

Some people don't have a lot of time to keep-up with these things, it should
be quick and easy for people to get the source, debug it, and then submit
fixes, including windows Developers.

When I look at the website, I have a hard time finding anything. I can't get
things to run on windows let alone deal with Linux, a new IDE, finding a
program to unzip the source, networking to my Windows Machine and source
code. What's wrong with zip files?

I'm the first one to admit I'm not a Linux guru; but I know windows very
well, and it's seems that's where the problems are...

I have created a Windows Forms application for the .Net 2.0 framework. I've
tested the application using MoMa, and no errors were detected. The only
thing is that I'm using a Sql Server Compact database (I distribute the Sql
Server Compact dll files so the database runs in process). From my
understanding, the System.Data.SqlServerCe is however not implemented for
mono. Also, when running the MoMa test for the SqlServerCe.dll file, I get a
whole lot of P/Invoke errors. This makes the dll unsuitable for using with
linux / mac from what I understand.

Will the SqlServerCe namespace be implemented for mono in the near future?

This is more of an alternative; you could try VistaDB, which has Mono
support, which supports T-Sql and everything else with Sql Server & is free
to redistribute.

The VS.NET solution for the runtime is in mono/msvc/. Beware it's not
always up-to-date and cygwin is still required for the build process.

The class libs usually do not have VS.NET solutions/projects.
Only district libs have some unsupported and not always up-to-date
project files, see Managed.Windows.Forms.

"Print" as in -- produce PDF documents?

You can use cairo (Mono.Cairo) with a PDF backend as a fairly raw (but
simple) solution but prolly something more "enterprisey" exists.

Hi all,
I have a problem with my sockets.

I have a server application that opens a UDP socket on a specified port
and listens for client's requests.

I have a client application that I want to open a UDP socket choosing
from a range of ports. The client then listens at the socket for responses.

My problem is that if I run more than one client then they all end up
listening to the same socket.

All the sockets are configured using the same calls:

System.Net.Sockets.Socket sock;

sock = new System.Net.Sockets.Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork,
SocketType.Dgram, ProtocolType.Udp);

IPEndPoint ep = new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, port);

sock.Bind(ep);

If I try to bind the client on to the server port then an exception is
raised
System.Net.Sockets.SocketException Address already in use.

If I try to run more than one client then I do not get this exception.

Am I doing something wrong?

We have no plans to implement this, but it is not a bad idea for someone
that might want to create a project that provides this API built on top
of Sqlite or VistaDB.

Might be worth adding to the Summer of Code pages.

You mean support in ASP.NET to generate content that renders on mobile
devices?   I do not believe we have implemented that.

Yeah, we talked about it at the mono summit, but real-life has kept me 
from preparing the patches that I promised to send Marek.

Hopefully I get around to it (and a couple other patches) at some point 
in the coming weeks. Most probably if battery-life lets me, it'll be 
during next week's Madrid-NY roundtrip :)

We've uninstalled mono 1.2.6 (tarball) in order to install 1.2.9 tarball
on a testing server.

mono --version returns 1.2.9 (tarball)
xsp2 --version returns 1.2.9 (tarballl)

mod_mono didn't work, so I tested xsp2.
The server starts, but when the first request comes in

What is Team Foundation / Team System?

Team Foundation is a 'collection of collaborative technologies that
support a team effort to deliver a product' from Microsoft that
includes bug tracking, source control, and other capabilities.'

Team Foundation powers Microsoft's CodePlex site and is used in many
corporate environments.

Team Foundation for Mono provides the TF client for accessing
Team Foundation Servers as well as the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.*
assemblies related to Version Control.

An example of accessing CodePlex to pull the latest version of
the "Turtle" project is below.

The VS.NET solution for the runtime is in mono/msvc/. Beware it's not
always up-to-date and cygwin is still required for the build process.

The class libs usually do not have VS.NET solutions/projects.
Only district libs have some unsupported and not always up-to-date
project files, see Managed.Windows.Forms.

Does this mean that no developer has looked at the bug?  If a developer looks at a bug
and decides to ignore or postpone it, is this recorded in the bug listing?  How often are open
bugs reviewed?

Smokey is a command line tool used to analyze assemblies and report  
problems. Problems include buggy code (e.g. infinite recursion, null  
deref, malformed format string), performance issues (e.g. string  
concatenation in loops, excessive boxing, large structs), violations  
of the .NET design guidelines (e.g. inheriting from  
ApplicationException or ICloneable, naming, and swallowing  
exceptions), and miscellaneous rules like misspelled words in string  
literals.

You can download Smokey from the web site:

has an html report for one of the System assemblies and a list of all  
of Smokey's rules.

Changes from Smokey 0.7.0.0:
* Added 21 new rules:
	APTCA1, AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assembly calls into a non-aptca  
assembly.
	APTCA2, class in a AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assembly derives  
from a class defined in a non-aptca assembly.
	ConflictingTransparency, a 100% transparent assembly uses  
SecurityCriticalAttribute.
	ImperativeSecurity, programmatic use of CodeAccessPermission objects.
	IndirectLinkDemand, method in the assembly calls a link demand  
method w/o performing any security checks.
	InternalInterface, overridable implementation of an internal  
interface method.
	KeepAlive, type with finalizer and IntPtr does not call GC.KeepAlive.
	NamedPermissionSet, a NamedPermissionSet is being instantiated with  
the name of one of the built-in permission sets.

	PathCombine, paths are being concatenated via string.Concat.
	PartitionAssembly, transparent and critical code is not partitioned  
correctly.
	PermitDenySecurity, assembly uses PermitDeny and/or Deny security  
actions.
	ReadOnlyArray, public or protected readonly array.
	SealedInheritanceDemand, sealed type has an inheritance demand.
	SecureAsserts, method asserts a permission, but caller does no  
security checks.
	SecureGetObjectData, GetObjectData is not protected with  
SerializationFormatter.
	SecureOverrides, type has a link demand and virtuals but no  
inheritance demands.
	TransparentAssert1, a 100% transparent assembly asserts a permission.
	TransparentAssert2, a mixed transparent/critical assembly has a  
transparent method which asserts a permission.
	UnmanagedCodeSecurity, SuppressUnmanagedCodeSecurityAttribute usage.
	VisibleEventHandler, an event handler method is public or protected.
* Tweaked the code so that it compiles with mono 1.2.6.
* Smokey now works with .NET (you'll need to have Mono.Cecil in  
Smokey's directory or somewhere else the CLR can find it) and you  
won't get file and line numbers.
* Replaced Mono.GetOptions with a much simpler options parser.
* Dependent assemblies in the directory of the assembly being tested  
are now correctly loaded.
* Fixed SuffixName rule: classes that implement IDictionary should  
have a Dictionary suffix, not a Collection suffix.
* Instead of throwing an exception if two assemblies define a type  
with the same name in the same namespace we now just use the first type.

Windows forms has projects and solutions for VS 2003 and 2005. If you
need it, you'll also need the Mono.Mozilla project (or at least
reference on the swf project). If you're talking about vstudio, then I
assume you're working on windows, so you don't need libgdiplus, since
mono on windows uses the system gdi instead.

You can do without the System.Drawing project if you're just doing
things on winforms - so you can reference .NET's System.Drawing on the
winforms project and use it if you want to debug just winforms.

Hi Geoff

Great work. I tried installing it and the installation completes
copying the files, but  fails when setting up the installation (I
guess doing the symlinks). Is there a log somewhere I can consult to
find out why it fails? My mac installations has a lot of stuff
installed so it might be because of this, if only I could debug it :-)

I create the Moma definition files from the Mono Windows Installer. 
There usually isn't an installer available until shortly before the 
final version comes out, so I don't think a definition file preview is 
going to happen.

A preview also doesn't make too much sense for Moma, as we are already 
frozen and are not going to be adding any methods to the release, just 
fixing regression bugs.

I've got a customer using RH 9 and I wanted to get mod_mono working.

I used the mono 1.2.1 installer (get same error with 1.2.4). Mono works
fine. I've compiled Apache 2.2 from source and it too works fine, except
that when it starts, mod_mono doesn't, probably because of this error:

/opt/mono-1.2.1/bin/mono: relocation error: /opt/mono-1.2.1/bin/mono:
symbol epoll_create, version GLIBC_2.3.2 not defined in file libc.so.6
with link time reference

Unfortunately, I cannot update the site to a newer version of Linux
because the customer is using a DBMS product which they'd also need to
upgrade.

I have mod_mono working fine on other sites using more recent Linux
distros (eg. OpenSuse 10.2).

It's not a mod_mono's fault. The problem is that your mono was compiled on a system
which supports the epoll set of syscalls, which apparently is not supported by libc
on the RH9 system. Recompiling mono on the machine you want to run it on should fix
the issue.

iirc, we dropped support for running mod_mono on redhat9.  I can't
remember if it was the reason you stated, or something different.

(I'm guessing it was different because we were building mono on rh9 at
the time).

Um, it may be worth brining your customer onto Fedora 8 and using the
rpms supplied there. From distant memory, I had all hells job getting
mono to do much with RH9!

Thanks to Kiwi[1] we should be able to get a new image out much sooner
after the next release.

As Joseph Hill noted in his blog post if you want a particular
application to be in the next VMware image the first step is to get it
building in the openSUSE Build Service[2].

I have a	 website which I develop on Windows and deploy on Linux.
I'm using SQLite which works on both platforms.

The only differences are

using System.Data.SQLite
vs
using Mono.Data.Sqlite

And for the classes:

SQLiteConnection
vs
SqliteConnection

Aside from these differences, the code to use these libraries is the  
same.

This means I have to use a series of sed commands to replace pieces of  
text.
This isn't a real problem for final deployment, but can be a real PITA  
when testing online.

Is there anyway to map these so I can keep System.Data.SQlite and  
SQLiteConnection, SQLiteCommand, etc... in my code
and still force mono to use System.Data.Sqlite instead?

(Guess changing the source code for Mono.Data.Sqlite would also be an  
option... but I'm hoping for something less drastic).

Hi Timothy,

Why not just use Mono.Data.SQLite on both platforms, thats what I do
in mojoPortal.
If you'd like I can send you Mono.Data.SQLite.dll which I compiled on
windows using VS.
It works fine on both windows and on linux. It also requires
Mono.Security.dll but I can send you that too.

New users such as myself trying to program an ASP .NET hello program with VS 2005 seem to stumple upon this server error:

I found that the default in VS 2005 is to consider CLS-Compliant as  
warning.
MonoDevelop consider it as an error.

How do I change this setting so I can compile my code?

Yes.  Mono doesn't care about language, it cares about IL, so any
compiler that generates IL can generate assemblies that will execute
under Mono.

So the only real questions are:

1. What language do you want to use?

2. Does that language have a compiler that runs on Linux?

If your language's compiler doesn't run on Linux, you can instead
compile your code on Windows and copy the resulting assemblies to Linux
(though care does need to be taken to ensure that you only use
types/methods that Mono has implemented; MoMA[0] can help in this).  For
example, C++/CLI on Windows with the /clr:safe flag should produce
assemblies that Mono will execute.

An incomplete list of languages that work under Linux:

Just before connection will be open I get the following exception:

"Unhandled Exception: System.ArgumentException: Culture ID 1034
(0x040A) is not a supported culture."

This code was working fine for me two weeks ago. I don't understand
what is the reason this code fails. By other hand the culture code
(0x040A) named in the exception is the correct code (traditional
spanish) although I don't pass the culture parameter explicitaly.

Does anybody know what is the problem?

Are there any tricks needed to get this to work?

I suppose I should explain a bit about what I'm trying to achieve.

We have core software developed under Linux, that we are hoping to make
accessible to Windows developers across a network. We are planning to do
this using network communication and also by exposing parts of the core
libraries.

To do this I want to provide an interface that can be used from Windows
(i.e. .Net) platforms and implemented in an agnostic way. Mono seems a
natural choice for this, but I am getting rather frustrated by C#.

I want to be able to write my interface libraries and call them from
Mono, .Net and also from native compiled code.

migrate running code across machines.

So shortly:
1. Which is the actual state of any similar concept in Mono's VM wether the
official implementation or alternative modifications?
2. Would that break compatibility with Microsoft's VM?
3. Are there any plans heared on Microsoft about implementing something
similar to achieve massive concurrency?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

gcc doesn't support C++/CLI.  Additionally, gcc doesn't (at this time)

Are these actual C/C++ dynamic (not static) libraries, or C/C++
programs?

If these are dynamic libraries, you can write a C wrapper API, then
use .NET Platform Invoke to write a set of wrapper classes that invoke
the wrapper.  Alternatively, you can use SWIG to generate the C and C#
wrappers that would be needed to interact with your C++ API:

	http://www.swig.org

Once the wrapper layer is written & compiled, any managed language will
be able to run against the wrapper layer, and (indirectly) use your
libraries.  Examples of this approach include Mono.Posix.dll and Gtk#.

Actually, we have been working on a port of GCC that emits IL.
It currently is in the branch st/cli of the repository. You can also 
take a look here: http://gcc.gnu.org/projects/cli.html
At this time, no library is provided (we plan to release a libc-like 
library soon), but the code generator should work.
C++ will not work though. But if GCC does most of the lowering, it might 
not be _too_ difficult to get some things working.

I don't think the OracleClient provider has been
tested with z/Linux.  The provider has mainly been
tested on 32-bit x86 platforms (little-endian), such
as, Linux, Windows, and Solaris x86.

Some questions:
1. is z/Linux big-endian or little-endian?
2. is z/Linux 32-bit or 64-bit?

Most of the problems you will find with the provider
is with the marshalling code using DllImport into the
OCI library -- especially the marshalling of integer
values.

 I have downloaded the mono installer for Other Linuxes three times. Each
time I get the same incorrect MD5 value. Below is the output I receive
with OpenSSL 0.9.7a:

 On comparison to the value in the instructions, this appears to be

Hi,

I've got a customer using RH 9 and I wanted to get mod_mono working.

I used the mono 1.2.1 installer (get same error with 1.2.4). Mono works
fine. I've compiled Apache 2.2 from source and it too works fine, except
that when it starts, mod_mono doesn't, probably because of this error:

/opt/mono-1.2.1/bin/mono: relocation error: /opt/mono-1.2.1/bin/mono:
symbol epoll_create, version GLIBC_2.3.2 not defined in file libc.so.6
with link time reference

Unfortunately, I cannot update the site to a newer version of Linux
because the customer is using a DBMS product which they'd also need to
upgrade.

I have mod_mono working fine on other sites using more recent Linux
distros (eg. OpenSuse 10.2).

Windows XP SP2, Firebird .NET data provider 2.1.0, Firebird Server 
2.0.3, Mono 1.2.6

When I run a most simple console application on Windows to connect to a 
database, everythings works fine. When I run the same application in a 
Mono box, there is an exception. I tried different character sets 
without success. I even downloaded the source code and compiled the data 
provider with ShardDevelop (Mono target), but this did not help either. 
How can I use  the Firebid .NET data provider in Mono ?

Just before connection will be open I get the following exception:

"Unhandled Exception: System.ArgumentException: Culture ID 1034
(0x040A) is not a supported culture."

This code was working fine for me two weeks ago. I don't understand
what is the reason this code fails. By other hand the culture code
(0x040A) named in the exception is the correct code (traditional
spanish) although I don't pass the culture parameter explicitaly.

Does anybody know what is the problem?

I am experiencing the same problem.

I have tried removing the <system.webServer>...< ../> part but it didn't
have any effect. 
If I use xsp I get the following error in the browser:
