Message-ID: <47A383AF.5040706@novell.com> Hey Everyone, We've just released Mono 1.9.0 Preview 1+ today! Please help us out by giving it a try with your applications. As always, you can get the preview releases here: http://mono.ximian.com/monobuild/preview/download-preview/ Please report any bugs that you may find using our Bugs page, AND reply to this thread with the bug numbers so we can track them! http://www.mono-project.com/Bugs The earlier you file the bugs and reply to this message, the more likely your bugs will get fixed. Special attention is given to regressions, so if you can tell us a version of Mono where the bug worked and tag the summary with [Regression], then it is much more likely your bug will get fixed. Please help the Mono team to make 1.9.0 the best release of Mono ever. Thanks again! Few months ago I asked to fix bug 342536 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342536), but it still not fixed. And i can't make any additional tests because this bug blocks my application at startup. Also i have a question. Don't you think that there already are too many bugs in tracker? I have many small applications for .NET 1.1 and 2.0 (SWF, ASP.NET) and i try to run them using each version of mono since version ~1.1.3 during few years and almost __ALL__ of them do not work properly. And when people ask me: "What can you say about mono?", i can answer only one thing: "is is very unstable and does not fit for real work". And this is a tendency for each new version. You make new releases with new features, but existing bugs fixed very slowly. For me it is clearly that Novell never overtakes Microsoft. Maybe it's better to polish existing code then try to implement new features? Some people don't have a lot of time to keep-up with these things, it should be quick and easy for people to get the source, debug it, and then submit fixes, including windows Developers. When I look at the website, I have a hard time finding anything. I can't get things to run on windows let alone deal with Linux, a new IDE, finding a program to unzip the source, networking to my Windows Machine and source code. What's wrong with zip files? I'm the first one to admit I'm not a Linux guru; but I know windows very well, and it's seems that's where the problems are... The only info I can find on VS is here: http://www.mono-project.com/Visual_Studio_Integration ( I have created a Windows Forms application for the .Net 2.0 framework. I've tested the application using MoMa, and no errors were detected. The only thing is that I'm using a Sql Server Compact database (I distribute the Sql Server Compact dll files so the database runs in process). From my understanding, the System.Data.SqlServerCe is however not implemented for mono. Also, when running the MoMa test for the SqlServerCe.dll file, I get a whole lot of P/Invoke errors. This makes the dll unsuitable for using with linux / mac from what I understand. Will the SqlServerCe namespace be implemented for mono in the near future? >From my understanding the SqlClient namespace is already implemented. Would it be hard to implement SqlServerCe for mono given that mono already has an implementation for SqlClient? Are there other options to make my application work with mono under mac / linux? I would really like to keep using my Sql Server Compact database, but switching namespaces won't really be a problem (Except if this would degrade performance). The VS.NET solution for the runtime is in mono/msvc/. Beware it's not always up-to-date and cygwin is still required for the build process. The class libs usually do not have VS.NET solutions/projects. Only district libs have some unsupported and not always up-to-date project files, see Managed.Windows.Forms. Hopefully I get around to it (and a couple other patches) at some point in the coming weeks. This is a development update with a new IRC changeset notification bot, support for CruiseControl (an open source continuous build framework), a monodevelop plugin for browsing TFS servers, several new commands ("shelve", "rollback", and "merges"), numerous API and usability enhancements, and many bugfixes. A detailed changelog can be found below. MonoDevelop Plugin Screenshot: http://flickr.com/photos/11527903 at N04/2231467443/ TfsBot Documentation: http://code.google.com/p/opentf/wiki/TfsBot To learn more about many of the unique features found in OpenTF see: http://code.google.com/p/opentf/wiki/ClientDifferences Example invocations of the opentf client can be found here: http://opentf.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/docs/examples/ Enhancements include: =================================================================== # TFSBOT: add new IRC commit notification daemon. # add alpha-quality MonoDevelop addin, with debian package # CRUISECONTROL: add support for date range queries to the history command, e.g. -version:"D2006-10-01T01:01:01Z~D2006-12-13T20:00:00Z" # CRUISECONTROL: add -noprompt option # CRUISECONTROL: add support for username at domain -login syntax # implement "tf shelve " to create new shelvesets # implement "tf shelve /delete " for deleting shelvesets # implement "tf merges " for listing merge points # implement "tf diff /ignorespace" option # implement "tf rollback " for undoing a changeset. NOTE: only useful if no one else has changed the file since then. # add Get.ChangesetMtimes setting: By enabling this option, the TF will set the modification time of any file subsequently fetched to the date of the last changeset in which the file was modified. Warning: this mode of operation can significantly slow down "tf get". # add Get.DefaultToCwd setting: By enabling this option, the TF client will look for updates starting with the current working folder instead of pulling updates from all registered working folders. # add Workspace.Default setting: If the TF client cannot determine the active workspace, first from the "/workspace:" option, and second the workspace cache, then it will use the Workspace.Default setting if non-null. API Enhancements ================================================================== # Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Common: Artifact, ArtifactId, ILinking LinkFilter, LinkingUtilities, ServiceInterfaces # Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client: ShelvingOptions, ChangesetMerge Bugfixes include: =================================================================== # tf history with stopAfter > 256 shouldn't emit duplicate entries (thanks to dion.olsthoorn for the report & fix) # tf online shouldn't croak if is an add awaiting its first checkin # tf undo shouldn't undo all local changes # When parsing changeset and shelveset datetimes don't drop the time portion # Insert trailing tabs after filenames (a/b) in diffs to help diffutils grok filenames with spaces # Make sure tf ls-files is not passed a filename # Set proper checkin time (by passing 0, not DateTime. Now - doh!) # Fix tf ls-files /others breakage on windows for subdirectories # Update local workspace cache when "tf workspaces" command called. # Fix issue #8 "tf config expects ~/.tf/ to already exist" # Teach tf that diffing binary files should print short "Binary files $1 and $2 differ" message # Teach status command how to deal with locked files # Teach tf branches command about server paths # Don't clobber workspace info cache when there are >1 TFS server # Update build for monodevelop 0.18.1 changes What is Team Foundation / Team System? =================================================================== Team Foundation is a 'collection of collaborative technologies that support a team effort to deliver a product' from Microsoft that includes bug tracking, source control, and other capabilities.' Team Foundation powers Microsoft's CodePlex site and is used in many corporate environments. Team Foundation for Mono provides the TF client for accessing Team Foundation Servers as well as the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.* assemblies related to Version Control. An example of accessing CodePlex to pull the latest version of the "Turtle" project is below. CodePlex Example Usage =================================================================== In the commands below, UID = your codeplex user name PWD = your codeplex password MACHINENAME = your machine name (or any other random name) First create a workspace: tf /server:https://tfs01.codeplex.com /login:snd\\UID,PWD workspace /new "MACHINENAME;UID" Then map the "Turtle" project to a local folder: tf /server:https://tfs01.codeplex.com /login:snd\\UID,PWD workfold "$/Turtle" ~/Source/turtle Then pull the files: tf /server:https://tfs01.codeplex.com /login:snd\\UID,PWD get ~/Source/turtle /recursive Then you could review the history, review a changeset, then look at the diff of the changeset. Note: the examples below assume the tf client "Credentials.Save" option was enabled. cd ~/Source/turtle tf history /recursive . tf changeset 340 tf diff C340 More examples can be found in the docs/examples/ folder. Source and Packages =================================================================== Deb packages, Win32 packages, RPM packages, and source tarball available here: http://code.google.com/p/opentf/downloads/list Additionally, a git clone of the source tree can be made with: git clone git://repo.or.cz/tfs.git This is where most development happens. SVN users can check out the semi-regularly updated project source code at: svn checkout http://opentf.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ opentf Project Site =================================================================== There is a Google Code Project Site for opentf, the URL is: http://code.google.com/p/opentf/ Cheers, jr -- Joel Reed Manager, Leadership Software Engineering Development Dimensions International, Inc. Problems include buggy code (e.g. infinite recursion, null deref, malformed format string), performance issues (e.g. string concatenation in loops, excessive boxing, large structs), violations of the .NET design guidelines (e.g. inheriting from ApplicationException or ICloneable, naming, and swallowing exceptions), and miscellaneous rules like misspelled words in string literals. You can download Smokey from the web site: . The web site also has an html report for one of the System assemblies and a list of all of Smokey's rules. Changes from Smokey 0.7.0.0: * Added 21 new rules: APTCA1, AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assembly calls into a non-aptca assembly. APTCA2, class in a AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assembly derives from a class defined in a non-aptca assembly. ConflictingTransparency, a 100% transparent assembly uses SecurityCriticalAttribute. ImperativeSecurity, programmatic use of CodeAccessPermission objects. IndirectLinkDemand, method in the assembly calls a link demand method w/o performing any security checks. InternalInterface, overridable implementation of an internal interface method. KeepAlive, type with finalizer and IntPtr does not call GC.KeepAlive. NamedPermissionSet, a NamedPermissionSet is being instantiated with the name of one of the built-in permission sets. NonVirtualInheritanceDemand, inheritance demand on a non-virtual method. PathCombine, paths are being concatenated via string.Concat. PartitionAssembly, transparent and critical code is not partitioned correctly. PermitDenySecurity, assembly uses PermitDeny and/or Deny security actions. ReadOnlyArray, public or protected readonly array. SealedInheritanceDemand, sealed type has an inheritance demand. SecureAsserts, method asserts a permission, but caller does no security checks. SecureGetObjectData, GetObjectData is not protected with SerializationFormatter. SecureOverrides, type has a link demand and virtuals but no inheritance demands. TransparentAssert1, a 100% transparent assembly asserts a permission. TransparentAssert2, a mixed transparent/critical assembly has a transparent method which asserts a permission. UnmanagedCodeSecurity, SuppressUnmanagedCodeSecurityAttribute usage. VisibleEventHandler, an event handler method is public or protected. * Tweaked the code so that it compiles with mono 1.2.6. * Smokey now works with .NET (you'll need to have Mono.Cecil in Smokey's directory or somewhere else the CLR can find it) and you won't get file and line numbers. * Replaced Mono.GetOptions with a much simpler options parser. * Dependent assemblies in the directory of the assembly being tested are now correctly loaded. * Fixed SuffixName rule: classes that implement IDictionary should have a Dictionary suffix, not a Collection suffix. * Instead of throwing an exception if two assemblies define a type with the same name in the same namespace we now just use the first type. -- Jesse From juraj.skripsky at gmail.com Wed Feb 6 05:46:13 2008 From: juraj.skripsky at gmail.com (Juraj Skripsky) Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2008 11:46:13 +0100 Subject: [Mono-list] mod_mono hanging In-Reply-To: <1202290453.7701.9.camel@vl00> References: <11356803.post@talk.nabble.com> <1202290453.7701.9.camel@vl00> Message-ID: <1202294773.2747.4.camel@leonardo.hotfeet.ch> This is a known and unfortunately still unsolved problem: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=348708 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=321772 - Juraj On Wed, 2008-02-06 at 10:34 +0100, Adriaan van Kekem wrote: > Hi, > > I am running 1.2.5 now, and still facing the same problem: > > > ** (/export/opt/mono-1.2.5/lib/mono/2.0/mod-mono-server2.exe:24533): WARNING **: CreateThread: error creating thread handle > > Unhandled Exception: System.ExecutionEngineException: Couldn't create thread > > ** (/export/opt/mono-1.2.5/lib/mono/2.0/mod-mono-server2.exe:24533): WARNING **: CreateThread: error creating thread handle > > Unhandled Exception: System.ExecutionEngineException: Couldn't create thread > at <0x00000> > at (wrapper managed-to-native) System.Object:__icall_wrapper_mono_delegate_begin_invoke (object, intptr) > at (wrapper delegate-begin-invoke) System.MulticastDelegate:begin_invoke_IAsyncResult_object_AsyncCallback_object (object,System.AsyncCallback, object) > at System.Threading.ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem (System.Threading.WaitCallback callback, System.Object state) [0x00000] > at System.Timers.Timer.StartTimer () [0x00000] > at (wrapper delegate-invoke) System.MulticastDelegate:invoke_void () > > > Mono version: > Mono JIT compiler version 1.2.5.1 (tarball) > Copyright (C) 2002-2007 Novell, Inc and Contributors. www.mono-project.com > TLS: __thread > GC: Included Boehm (with typed GC) > SIGSEGV: normal > Architecture: x86 > Disabled: none > > The error happens with mod_mono with mod-mono-server2 most of the time > during the night. If you need it, you'll also need the Mono.Mozilla project (or at least reference on the swf project). If you're talking about vstudio, then I assume you're working on windows, so you don't need libgdiplus, since mono on windows uses the system gdi instead. You can do without the System.Drawing project if you're just doing things on winforms - so you can reference .NET's System.Drawing on the winforms project and use it if you want to debug just winforms. andreia gaita From anders at iola.dk Wed Feb 6 08:37:06 2008 From: anders at iola.dk (Anders Rune Jensen) Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2008 14:37:06 +0100 Subject: [Mono-list] Announcing: Mono.framework 1.2.6_6 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <260c534f0802060537i61cbeb30pbfe1604a73b41569@mail.gmail.com> On Feb 5, 2008 6:17 PM, Geoff Norton wrote: > We are proud to announce that we have released Mono v1.2.6_6 for the Mac to > our download page. I tried installing it and the installation completes copying the files, but fails when setting up the installation (I guess doing the symlinks). Is there a log somewhere I can consult to find out why it fails? There usually isn't an installer available until shortly before the final version comes out, so I don't think a definition file preview is going to happen. A preview also doesn't make too much sense for Moma, as we are already frozen and are not going to be adding any methods to the release, just fixing regression bugs. The problem is that your mono was compiled on a system which supports the epoll set of syscalls, which apparently is not supported by libc on the RH9 system. I'm using SQLite which works on both platforms. The only differences are using System.Data.SQLite vs using Mono.Data.Sqlite And for the classes: SQLiteConnection vs SqliteConnection Aside from these differences, the code to use these libraries is the same. This means I have to use a series of sed commands to replace pieces of text. This isn't a real problem for final deployment, but can be a real PITA when testing online. Is there anyway to map these so I can keep System.Data.SQlite and SQLiteConnection, SQLiteCommand, etc... in my code and still force mono to use System.Data.Sqlite instead? (Guess changing the source code for Mono.Data.Sqlite would also be an option... but I'm hoping for something less drastic). Thank you. Timothy. Yes. Mono doesn't care about language, it cares about IL, so any compiler that generates IL can generate assemblies that will execute under Mono. So the only real questions are: 1. What language do you want to use? 2. Does that language have a compiler that runs on Linux? If your language's compiler doesn't run on Linux, you can instead compile your code on Windows and copy the resulting assemblies to Linux (though care does need to be taken to ensure that you only use types/methods that Mono has implemented; MoMA[0] can help in this). For example, C++/CLI on Windows with the /clr:safe flag should produce assemblies that Mono will execute. I suppose I should explain a bit about what I'm trying to achieve. We have core software developed under Linux, that we are hoping to make accessible to Windows developers across a network. We are planning to do this using network communication and also by exposing parts of the core libraries. To do this I want to provide an interface that can be used from Windows (i.e. .Net) platforms and implemented in an agnostic way. Mono seems a natural choice for this, but I am getting rather frustrated by C#. I want to be able to write my interface libraries and call them from Mono, .Net and also from native compiled code. thanks dan From jacobopolavieja at gmail.com Mon Feb 11 06:17:43 2008 From: jacobopolavieja at gmail.com (Jacobo Polavieja) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 12:17:43 +0100 Subject: [Mono-list] Actual state of MicroThreads/Continuations? Message-ID: I've read about some Microthreading and continuations work on Mono: http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2006/Jun-07-1.html http://secondlife.blogs.com/babbage/2006/05/microthreading_.html http://www.mail-archive.com/mono-devel-list at lists.ximian.com/msg07285.html Tomi Valkeinen's page on Mono (http://bat.org/~tomba/monoco.html) doesn't have the info anymore. About SecondLife's implementation I couldn't even find if they open sourced the code related to their microthreads implementation (or if they're even obliged to by license), but seemed very interesting due to being able to migrate running code across machines. So shortly: 1. Which is the actual state of any similar concept in Mono's VM wether the official implementation or alternative modifications? 2. Would that break compatibility with Microsoft's VM? 3. Are there any plans heared on Microsoft about implementing something similar to achieve massive concurrency? Any info is greatly appreciated. If these are dynamic libraries, you can write a C wrapper API, then use .NET Platform Invoke to write a set of wrapper classes that invoke the wrapper. Alternatively, you can use SWIG to generate the C and C# wrappers that would be needed to interact with your C++ API: http://www.mono-project.com/dllimport http://www.swig.org Once the wrapper layer is written & compiled, any managed language will be able to run against the wrapper layer, and (indirectly) use your libraries. Examples of this approach include Mono.Posix.dll and Gtk#. If this is a C/C++ program, you can use Mono's embedding interface so that your program acts as a host for managed code, and then you can provide "internal calls" so that managed code can invoke your exported methods: http://www.mono-project.com/Embedding_Mono Second Life is embedding mono to run their scripting engine: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/01/29/mono-beta-launch/ http://www.mono-project.com/Scripting_With_Mono > To do this I want to provide an interface that can be used from Windows > (i.e. .Net) platforms and implemented in an agnostic way. You can also take a look here: http://gcc.gnu.org/projects/cli.html At this time, no library is provided (we plan to release a libc-like library soon), but the code generator should work. C++ will not work though. But if GCC does most of the lowering, it might not be _too_ difficult to get some things working. -- Erven. >> I suppose I should explain a bit about what I'm trying to achieve. >> >> We have core software developed under Linux, that we are hoping to make >> accessible to Windows developers across a network. The provider has mainly been tested on 32-bit x86 platforms (little-endian), such as, Linux, Windows, and Solaris x86. Some questions: 1. is z/Linux big-endian or little-endian? 2. is z/Linux 32-bit or 64-bit? Most of the problems you will find with the provider is with the marshalling code using DllImport into the OCI library -- especially the marshalling of integer values. --- Edwin Kim wrote: > Hello mono-list, > > I tried to access the Oracle Data Source using > System.Data.OracleClient from z/linux (s390x), > and I get this Error-Message: > > > Unhandled Exception: System.NullReferenceException: > Object reference not set to an instance of an object > at > System.Data.OracleClient.Oci.OciStatementHandle.Prepare > (System.String commandText) [0x00000] > at > System.Data.OracleClient.OracleCommand.PrepareStatement > (System.Data.OracleClient.Oci.OciStatementHandle > statement) [0x00000] > at > System.Data.OracleClient.OracleCommand.ExecuteReader > (CommandBehavior behavior) [0x00000] > at > System.Data.OracleClient.OracleCommand.ExecuteReader > () [0x00000] > at (wrapper remoting-invoke-with-check) > System.Data.OracleClient.OracleCommand:ExecuteReader > () > at Test.Main (System.String[] args) [0x00000] > > the code: > using System; > using System.Data; > using System.Data.OracleClient; > > public class Test > { > public static void Main (string[] args) > { > string connectionString = > "Data Source=wpsdb;" + > "User ID=test;" + > "Password=test;"; > OracleConnection dbcon = null; > dbcon = new OracleConnection > (connectionString); > dbcon.Open (); > > OracleCommand dbcmd = dbcon.CreateCommand (); > string sql = "SELECT * FROM dual"; > dbcmd.CommandText = sql; > OracleDataReader reader = dbcmd.ExecuteReader > (); > // clean up > reader.Close (); > reader = null; > dbcmd.Dispose (); > dbcmd = null; > dbcon.Close (); > dbcon = null; > } > } > > > OS: z/linux (sles10 sp1) with > mono-data-oracle-1.2.2-12.12 and installed Oracle > instantclient 10.2 > > compiled: mcs test1.cs /r:System.Data.dll > /r:System.Data.OracleClient.dll > run: mono test1.exe > > Did I forget something ? > or will the System.Data.OracleClient not work with > on z/Linux environment? > > Best regards, > Edwin > > > _______________________________________________ > Mono-list maillist - Mono-list at lists.ximian.com > http://lists.ximian.com/mailman/listinfo/mono-list > ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? I used the mono 1.2.1 installer (get same error with 1.2.4). Mono works fine. I've compiled Apache 2.2 from source and it too works fine, except that when it starts, mod_mono doesn't, probably because of this error: /opt/mono-1.2.1/bin/mono: relocation error: /opt/mono-1.2.1/bin/mono: symbol epoll_create, version GLIBC_2.3.2 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference Unfortunately, I cannot update the site to a newer version of Linux because the customer is using a DBMS product which they'd also need to upgrade.
